Princess Mako and Mr Komuro’s relationship has been heavily covered by the media in Japan.
They first met at the International Christian University in Tokyo 2012, were engaged in 2017, and their delayed 2018 wedding is now set for later this month.
Under Japanese law, female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a “commoner” although male members do not.
This excessive media coverage around the princess – whose father is Crown Prince Fumihito – has caused the princess to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to news outlet Kyodo.
