An elk who got a tyre stuck around its neck for at least two years has been freed.

Wildlife officers in the US state of Colorado first became aware of the animal and its predicament while conducting a population survey in July 2019.

But given its location they say it “was difficult to find, and harder to get close to.”

Finally, after four attempts to try and help it, officers were finally able to tranquilise the animal and remove the tyre.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Scott Murdoch, who with colleague Dawson Swanson helped the elk, said it was in surprisingly good shape despite its ordeal.
